Nibbles & Sips: Anion Station Sailor Moon Cafe

Welcome to the first ever edition of Nibbles & Sips!  In honor of this momentous occasion we’re starting with a fun one, the limited time Sailor Moon Cafe at Anion Station!!

Now, I must make a confession before we begin.  Prior to this trip I had viewed a total of ONE episode of Sailor Moon.  I realize this is a cardinal sin for a female expat, however I believe I’ve made up for this grievous mistake by being converted during my lunch.

The Anion Station cafe, located in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, is a basement restaurant that is rented out periodically for various themed restaurants.  Currently, to mark the broadcasting of the new Sailor Moon Crystal anime series, the restaurant is holding scheduled themed meals complete with viewings of the show.  Unlike other themed restaurants in Japan where you receive a voucher for a time to return, you must make a reservation in advance.  A friend had made the reservation and graciously invited me along with her and another friend. IMG_3710 Finding the cafe can be a bit of a struggle, as Kabukicho is littered with signage and neon lights.  If you can find your way to the Don Quixote then continue toward the cinema at the end of the road.  The cafe is on your left, and is located in a basement.

And now for everyone’s favorite thing (or maybe just my favorite): food pictures!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The inside of the cafe is dimly lit to allow for prime screen viewing while they show episodes.  It also features extremely small tables that only seat two, so if you bring a large group, you will be split up.

The overly adorable range of food options.  Possible choices are all heavily sugared, so be aware that you will be in a sugar coma promptly upon leaving.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Before the viewing begins audience members are able to request songs to be played by the DJ via Twitter (all from Sailor Moon of course).  As you can see, my selection was displayed on the live feed as they played it, which was a fun feature!

IMG_3715 Kampai!!  Though they look pretty enough to be beachside cocktails, these soda drinks are all non-alcoholic.  Each drink is based off of a specific character, and comes with fruit and a light up ice cube.

IMG_3718 And the cutest of the cute – Sailor Moon pancake!!  The moon is a large pat of butter, and whipped cream with strawberries is served on the side.  My favorite part was the little syrup shot glass, which I hesitantly emptied over my pancake.

Overall impression: As with all themed cafes in Japan it is best to bear in mind that the food will never be ‘good’.  You pay for the experience, the chance to see some truly adorable things, and to take fun pictures with friends.  In total my meal was 1700円, which seems reasonable to me (I believe the Pokemon Cafe was a bit more expensive).  For an afternoon out with the girls this was a wonderful trip!!  Will be looking forward to what the Anion Station has in store for customers next rotation!
